Today it is well known that the future has become a thing of the past.

Gone are the days when humanity dreamt of a different tomorrow. All that remains of that hope is a distant memory. Indeed, most of what is hoped for these days is no more than some slightly modified version of the present, if not simply the return to a status quo ante — i.e., to a present that only recently became deceased. This is the utopia of normality, evinced by the drive to “get everything running back to normal” (back to the prosperity of the Clinton years, etc.). In this heroically banal vision of the world, all the upheaval and instability of the last few years must necessarily appear as just a fluke or bizarre aberration. A minor hiccup, that’s all. Once society gets itself back on track, the argument goes, it’ll be safe to resume the usual routine.

Those for whom the present of just a short time ago already seemed to be charting a disastrous course, however, are compelled to imagine a still more remote past: a past that humanity might someday revisit, after completing its long journey through the wilderness of modernity. Having lost its way some centuries back — around the start of the Industrial Revolution — this would signal an end to the hubristic conceit that society can ever achieve self-mastery. Humanity’s homecoming, in this model, is much like that of the prodigal son’s. Never again will it wander too far afield. From this time forward, it’ll stick to the straight and narrow.

Neither of these temporalities, whether oriented toward the present or the past, is entirely what it seems, however. How so?

For one thing, the present (at least, the present of the last two hundred or so years) is never fully present. It’s always getting ahead of itself, lunging headlong into the future, outstripping every prognosis and expectation. But no sooner has its velocity increased than it finds itself right back where it started. Just as swiftly as the present speeds itself up, it feels the ground beneath it begin to shift: a cyclolinear running in place, as it were. The ceaseless proliferation of the new now presents itself as the eternal return of the same old, same old. Novelty today has become quotidian, if not wholly antique. It should thus hardly come as a shock that Marxian theorists like Moishe Postone have described a peculiar treadmill effect that occurs under capitalism.[1] History of late may be going nowhere,[2] but it’s going nowhere faster.

The idea of a prelapsarian past, of the “good old days” before everything went wrong, proves just as problematic. Not by chance does the imagery used to depict this past recall biblical overtones. Make no mistake of it: this is Eden before the Fall, the paradise of a blinkered naïveté — those carefree days before humanity dared to taste the fruit of knowledge. Trying to locate the precise moment at which things took a turn for the worse is trickier than it looks, however. As suggested earlier, this past stands at a far greater remove from the present than the chain of presents that expired not too long ago.[3] Its reality recedes into the mists of prehistory.

Upon closer inspection, moreover, it soon becomes clear that by its very logic this must be a far more glacial, unchanging past than anywhere in fact existed. For insofar as the “future” (in the robust sense) is conceived as the possibility that historically given conditions can be radically transformed — that there is a τέλος toward which humanity might progress — it is necessary that this past preclude it. This is a past that has been hermetically sealed off from such eventualities. In other words, it is the primitivist past that prevents the future from ever presenting itself.

So on the one hand, there is the present that constantly chases after the future without ever arriving. On the other, there is the past that is nowhere presently available, and which must, furthermore, maintain a safe distance from the present, due to the latter’s continued romance with futurity.

If all this is true, however, what ever became of the future? What does it mean to say that one day, in history, the future ceased to exist?

The futureless present

These are the questions the Italian autonomist and media theorist Franco “Bifo” Berardi seeks to address in his latest book, After the Future (2011). Berardi’s provocative thesis is that “the future is over.” By this he does not mean the future in terms of “the direction of time” — as that which will transpire subsequent to the present. Rather, he understands it as a sort of mentalité: “the psychological perception…, which emerged in the cultural situation of progressive modernity,” based on “cultural expectations that were fabricated during the long period of modern civilization.”[4] Tracing a line of thought that leads from Marinetti’s famed Futurist Manifesto in 1909 to the grim proclamation of “No Future” by the pioneers of punk rock, Berardi asserts that the 1970s witnessed the final crisis of faith in the modernist promise of a better future. While it enjoyed a brief resurgence around the turn of the millennium (paralleling the rise of the Internet), the futuristic ambitions that emanated from this encounter were soon dashed by the dotcom crash, the wave of military interventions following September 11th, and the global economic downturn after 2008.[5] The prevailing mood of technophilic optimism gave way to despair.

Central to Berardi’s interpretation in After the Future, of course, is his contention that this idea of the future is itself historically constituted. That is to say, the newfound sense that humanity stood on the brink of a radically new and unprecedented age had emerged alongside the rapid development of the forces of production that took place at the dawn of the modern period. As such, this feeling was closely allied to the concept of progress, which had just then begun to acquire currency. Each of these concepts — progress, as well as the future humanity would thereby attain — only became possible with the advent of modernity.[6] This vision of the future (which, as Bifo observes, now merged with prior categories of utopia)[7] thus owed in no small part to “the considerable speeding up of the pace of social change.”[8]

At this point, the eschatological “world to come” prophesied by religion was divested of its supernatural character, descending from the clouds of heaven above to find its place on the solid ground of earth below. The celestial became terrestrial. Utopia was torn out of its conceptual “nowhere” in the brains of philosophers and transplanted into political programs for the here-and-now. Neverland left the pens of novelists and fell within the scope of the not-so-distant future. The absolutes of religion, philosophy, and art became worldly. Modernity removed these ideals from the timeless space of eternity, projecting them onto the temporal horizon of the future. Bifo is therefore correct to specify:

The rise of the myth of the future is rooted in modern capitalism, in the experience of expansion of the economy and knowledge. The idea that the future will be better than the present is not a natural idea, but the imaginary effect of the peculiarity of the bourgeois production model…In the second part of the nineteenth century, and in the first part of the twentieth, the myth of the future reached its peak,…based on the concept of “progress,” the ideological translation of the reality of economic growth. Political action was reframed in the light of this faith in the progressive future. Liberalism and social democracy, nationalism and communism, and anarchism itself…share a common certainty: notwithstanding the darkness of the present, the future will be bright.[9]

This hoped-for future would thus seem to have been the outcome of a specific historical experience. Any disruption to this experience, if possessed of a sufficient magnitude or duration, threatened to undermine this futuristic orientation. Just as the future historically came into existence, so might it also historically pass out of existence.

Such an event, according to Bifo’s account, finally occurred in the decade after 1968. This coincided with the crystallization of neoliberal capitalism. Berardi singles out 1977, somewhat idiosyncratically (though doubtless self-servingly),[10] as marking “the year of passage beyond modernity.”[11] Here a number of factors — deregulation, doubts as to the prospect of unlimited growth, and the dismantling of the welfare state — converged so as to bring the modern epoch to its dismal (and decidedly unheroic) conclusion. With the passing of postwar modernism amidst the breakdown of Fordist models of state-centric capitalism, the bright future to which it once aspired dimmed. “Moderns are those who live time as the sphere of a progress toward perfection, or at least toward improvement, enrichment, and rightness,” Berardi explains. “Since the turning point of the century that trusted in the future — which I like to place in 1977 — humankind has abandoned this illusion.”[12] The society of the present has for several decades now been “post-futurist,” as the title of his book implies, existing literally after the future historically came and went. The world as it could be has today been collapsed into the insurmountable confines of the world as it is: “The promise is over. The era of post-future has begun.”[13]

Of course, the “post-futuristic” world heralded by Berardi is only the latest in a long line of “posts” that have accumulated the last few decades. These typically assume the form of prefixes appended to various nouns and adjectives. To name only a few: post-philosophy (Heidegger’s The End of Philosophy, 1961), post-ideology (Bell’s The End of Ideology, 1962), “postindustrial” society (Bell’s The Coming of Postindustrial Society, 1976), post-aesthetics (Danto’s “The End of Art,” 1978), postmodernism (Lyotard’s Postmodern Condition, 1979), “post-political” politics (the Post-Political Politics of Negri, Guattari, Bifo, or Tronti, 1980), post-Marxism (“Post-Marxism without Apologies” by Laclau and Mouffe, 1987), post-history/posthistoire (Fukuyama’s End of History, 1989), etc. Most of the time, though, the “transcendental signifier” undergirding all these terms — to use the parlance favored by this discourse — is postmodernism. Unsurprisingly, it is Berardi himself who draws the connection between postmodernism and the present age of post-futurism. He notes that 1977, the date that he associates with the death of the future, was simultaneously “the year that Jean-François Lyotard wrote The Postmodern Condition: A Report on Knowledge, in which he analyzed the new organization of knowledge and the disappearance of the grand narrative of progressive modernity.”[14] So despite the earnest efforts of those who, like Slavoj Žižek[15] and Jason Schulman,[16] have recently come out “in defense of grand narratives” (even as “lost causes”), Bifo chooses to uphold Lyotard’s dictum of “incredulity toward metanarratives.”[17] He thus rejects out of hand any attempt to construe history as the progressive unfolding of human emancipation.

Regrettably, the theoretical and practical framework Berardi adopts in After the Future proves far less interesting than his overarching claim that the future has ended. His theoretical exposition of the problem of post-futurist society is extravagant, jargon-laden, and dense.[18] Berardi’s vague (if not outright baffling) gestures toward a practical solution — which recommend, e.g., a secularized “translation” of “the Christian concept of ‘resignation’,” “poetry and therapy (thera-poetry),” “radical passivity” through “active withdrawal,” even “suicide” — are likewise disappointing.[19] Ben Lear has quite aptly dubbed Berardi’s political outlook “lifeboat communism.”[20] These deficiencies may be bracketed for the time being, however. Leaving aside such unfortunate ventures into the realm of theory and exasperated appeals at the level of practice, the first thing that must be acknowledged about his thesis is its basic accuracy. On this score there is little room for doubt. The radiant future envisioned by past generations has today all but vanished from sight, disappearing into the neverending gray on gray of the existing state of affairs. In its place looms the disturbing image of a futureless present, which swallows up every possible alternative to conditions as they currently obtain. As Theodor Adorno once remarked of Huxley’s dystopia, here “the future bows before the omnipotence of the present.”[21]

Same as it ever was

From this perspective, then, it would appear that Peter Frase’s article on “Four Futures” this last winter is misguided, on the simple grounds that it posits four futures too many.[22] There is precisely no future to be hoped for at present. Closer to Berardi’s position by far are Salar Mohandesi and Asad Haider in their piece, “Is There a Future for Socialism?” Mohandesi and Haider maintain that “revolutionary politics does not occur in the future tense — it’s not a state of affairs to be established.” Cribbing some lines from Lyotard and Marx, they prefer instead to speak of “the future anterior: the real movement, the current activity of the proletariat which will have been the basis for the transformation of society.”[23] This is, as the authors freely admit, old hat. It harkens back not only to The German Ideology, which they explicitly cite, but even more immediately to some of Benjamin’s famous passages from “On the Concept of History.”[24] But Mohandesi and Haider rely too heavily on the account it provides of German Social-Democracy, and read Adorno’s critiques of progress and the Enlightenment one-sidedly. In their haste to assimilate Frankfurt School critical theory to the practical armature of Italian operaismo,[25] they commit a number of sloppy logical and factual errors along the way. As a result, though their essay represents a welcome corrective to inevitabilist philosophies of history (in which the future victory of revolution is supposedly “guaranteed”), it falls well short in other respects.

The vision that most nearly approximates Berardi’s post-futurist world can perhaps be found in Max Ajl’s reflection, “Planet of Fields.” In this terse antiurban tirade, he indicts modern industrial capitalism as “an economic system premised on limitless growth.”[26] Ajl deploys the ecological motif of “unsustainable” development, a line of argumentation that has become increasingly fashionable in recent decades (ever since the publication of the Club of Rome’s influential study, The Limits to Growth). Indeed, Bifo highlights this theme of the exhaustibility of material resources as one of the chief factors supplanting expectations of unlimited future abundance. “Exhaustion plays no role in the imagination of modernity,” he writes.[27] Even Marx, claims Berardi, could not conceive of a world in which the end of capitalist society had been brought about by sheer energy depletion.[28] Ajl and Berardi describe this danger in virtually identical terms. Ajl: The present rate of growth is sustained only by “temporal theft, in this case from the future.”[29] Berardi: “The capitalist dynamic is based on a perpetual process of investment in a borrowed future.”[30] (If this rhetoric sounds familiar, however, that’s because it is — read any of Ron Paul’s rants on “deficit spending” as “a tax on future generations”).[31]

At first blush, one might easily get the impression that Ajl’s article gives evidence of renewed concern with the future, with all its talk of the disinherited generations to come. It soon becomes clear, however, that the only way the author thinks humanity can survive is for it to reinstate the past. Against bourgeois society’s “ceaseless drive to urbanization, industrialization, and capital- and input-intensive agriculture,” Ajl follows Colin Duncan in stressing “the centrality of [‘low-impact’] agriculture.” He thus counterposes an order founded upon a more modest, traditional agrarian model to the megalopolitan nightmare-city of the last couple centuries.[32] In order to carry out this neo-Neolithic revolution, Ajl calls for a policy of “repeasantization” — a telling slip-of-the-pen.[33] Presumably, what he means by this is not literally the restoration of some sort of peasantry, as this feudal title tends to imply a certain legal and political status: enserfment, congenital bondage to the land (the manor or estate of a local nobleman), and the compulsory alienation of one’s property and labor to his lord as part of a corvée system. Most farmers are not peasants. Rather, what Ajl probably has in mind is a new yeomanry, tilling the soil in the bucolic splendor of the countryside. Although he insists “smallholder agriculture is not an antiquarian curio,” the spirit that animates Ajl’s atavistic vision is clearly conjured up out of the ideological ectoplasm of a romantic anti-capitalism.[34] It is nourished on “the view that if only capitalism had not come into existence we could all be living in a happy hobbit-land of freed peasants and independent small producers.”[35]

This would perhaps seem a neat bit of buffoonery — a quaint throwback to the petit-bourgeois socialism dismissed in the Manifesto as “reactionary and Utopian”[36] — were it not for the widespread support it enjoys in anti-capitalist circles today. The idyllic past it portrays is, of course, a fiction. Family farming has since the 1970s become fetishized by the “small is beautiful” Left, roughly around the same time as family-owned farms began to go extinct (transformed into subsidiaries of large-scale agribusiness). Leftish urbanites and self-proclaimed student radicals today often see in traditional agriculture the vestiges of a simple, honest, and upright way of life that has otherwise been lost in modern times. Seldom is it remembered that in former times the provincial homestead was a bastion of conservatism and bulwark of the ancien régime, a home to ignorance, illiteracy, patriarchy, superstition, and the domestic slavery of women.[37] Not for nothing did Marx and Engels contemptuously refer to it as a haven for “the idiocy of rural life.”[38]

On the surface of things, however, Ajl’s program for a gradual depopulation of urban centers and a reversion to pastoral forms may seem to stand at odds with the autonomous, semi-collectivized “singularities” (“Non-Temporary Autonomous Zones”)[39] that Berardi believes will arise amidst the crumbling cityscapes of metropolitan modernity — taking root between the cracks in the pavement. The world that Bifo forecasts as following from the present is not one of high-density urban dwelling. It is rather the environment of “the post-urban desert.”[40] Berardi defines the modern city in the information age as the “city of panic,” in which “a chaotic sprawl following no rule, no plan, dictated solely by the logic of economic interest” predominates, an undulating mass of neurosis and desire electronically transmitted over invisible airwaves and dispersed throughout cyberspace.[41] Against such forces of psychosexual disintegration and frustration, Berardi proposes the “creation of social zones of human resistance that act like zones of therapeutic contagion.”[42]

Bifo’s post-urban future and Ajl’s pre-urban pastures differ only in their initial appearance — as mirror opposites, each resulting from one and the same logic of post-futurism — without, therefore, differing at all in kind.

Senility and the post-futurist passé

In the absence of any viable future, the gaze of all humanity turns impotently toward the past. What emerges from such inauspicious times as these is thus a renovated passéism, in which the only imaginable society other than the one which presently endures must be seen as reminiscent of its earlier incarnations.[43] Instead of forging a way forward into the great unknown, into an as-yet-unseen social formation, the only path that presently seems feasible for humanity is to flee into the familiar comfort of a new dark age. Even Ajl’s “Planet of Fields” is just one step removed from Zerzanite primitivism. To their credit, Mohandesi and Haider explicitly reject this latter-day form of Luddism,[44] reasserting the openness of the present. Ajl, by contrast, addresses the primitivists’ challenge only en passant, obliquely brushing it aside on the grounds that nomadic hunter-gatherer society could never support a large population.[45] And yet the Zerzanites can be said to possess at least one undeniable, if somewhat dubious, merit — the extreme lucidity with which they express their madness.

Nor are their views all that far off from those of somebody like Berardi, who at least nominally still considers himself a Marxist (although Italian autonomia has always been known for its colorful heterodoxy). Abandoning all hope for a future beyond capitalism, Bifo retracts many of the stances he held during the 1970s, succumbing to a form of catastrophism à la Baudrillard.[46] Berardi no longer sanctions any form of political engagement; rather, he preaches disengagement through “withdrawal.” “Withdrawal means creation of space where solidarity can be rebuilt,” he writes, “and where self-relying communities can start a process of proliferation, contagion, and eventually, of reversal of the trend.”[47] As with the primitivists, there is no future to strive after — there is only the present to wait out.

Toward the close of After the Future, Bifo examines the trend toward “senilization” in Europe and evaluates its political potential.[48] He takes the aging European population as an antipode to the classical futurists’ youthful bravado and ferocious anti-geriatric disquisitions: from David Burliuk’s “everyone’s young young young, infernal hunger in the stomach”[49] to Vladimir Maiakovskii’s “I have not a single gray hair in my soul.”[50] Berardi embraces postmodernist senility over modernist juvenility, speculating that the older generation of Europeans may even act as the “subject” of history in helping overthrow capitalism.[51] He goes so far as to champion a “senile utopia” founded on the principles of exhaustion and “UnGrowth.”[52] “[T]he process of senilization may open the way to a cultural revolution based on the force of exhaustion,” Berardi ponders, “of facing the inevitable with grace, discovering the sensuous slowness of those who do not expect any more from life than wisdom — the wisdom of those who have seen a great deal without forgetting, who look at each thing as if for the first time.”[53]

Bifo here can almost be seen winking at the Spartacists, as if to confirm the judgment they passed years ago on his post-workerist contemporaries, Hardt and Negri, whom they pathologized as symptoms of “the senile dementia of post-Marxism.”[54] But Berardi is far from the only one to find fault with the youthful exuberance some have displayed toward the future. “The modern infantilization of politics goes along with a constant orientation of politics towards the future,” art historian and ex-Situationist T.J. Clark despondently writes in an article that appeared this last April, “For a Left with No Future.”[55] In his Aeschylean appraisal of the twentieth century (i.e., his “tragic perspective”),[56] the Theban tragedy of the last hundred years presents no discernible rhyme or reason — no “shape or logic [as to] a development from past to future.” The anxiously-awaited twentieth century instead contained only “a false future entwined with a past.”[57] For Clark, as with Berardi, much of the blame can be laid at the doorstep of its future-oriented conception of history, an understanding that lends itself to the presumptive leadership of political vanguards and artistic avant-gardes (each stemming from the military metaphor, denoting soldiers sent to serve on the frontlines of battle).[58]

This argument of Clark’s is not new. He has been hinting at it for several years now. As his group Retort — a collaborative writing project with Iain Boal, Joseph Matthews, and Michael Watts — already explained in an earlier interview from 2008, “the questions of modernity and vanguardism are intertwined.” Both are founded, its members contend, on “the belief that history has a knowable path into the future.” That is to say, modernism and avant-gardism commonly rely on an idea of a future that may be readily ascertained by those elements within society that are furthest “advanced.” Proceeding along roughly the same lines as Berardi, Retort maintains that, in the decade since 9/11, “[modernity’s] very model of temporality [has foundered]: its assumption that history is future-directed, and therefore open to direction.” Anticipating the theme of Clark’s later proposal “For a Left with No Future,” the group asks: “What will the Left be like without futurity — without the notion of the vanguard as handmaid of history?”[59]

Against avant-gardist notions, Clark maintains that political radicals must cultivate a “kind of middle wisdom,” arguing that in days ahead “the Left will have to rediscover in its bourgeois past.”[60] But the “bourgeois past” he refers to here is certainly not its revolutionary past — the past of Locke, Rousseau, or Diderot. Clark turns instead to the late-Victorian figure of A.C. Bradley, “a tragic voice …obliged to put adolescence behind it.”[61]

The post-futurist passé has less to do with the past, however, than it does with the senility of a forgotten future. Such glittering images of the past, the make-believe worlds of a bygone age, are no more than placeholders for the future that once was. “Today the past is dead,” Fredric Jameson declared in 1982. “As for the future, it is for us either irrelevant or unthinkable.”[62] But under what kind of conditions would the (re)imagination of the future become possible again? Passéism today is a product of the senescence of the Left, of a world trapped within the stunted temporality of the permanent present.

Anticipatory nihilism: No future is the new future

Though Clark is refreshingly circumspect and honest in his willingness to investigate the numerous historical defeats of the Left, he often nevertheless slides into an unmistakable defeatism.[63] Clark revels in the futility and irrelevance of the Left to such a perverse degree that he suggests building an entire politics around it. He declares:

There will be no future…without war, poverty, Malthusian panic, tyranny, cruelty, classes, dead time, and all the ills the flesh is heir to, because there will be no future; only a present in which the Left (always embattled and marginalized, always — proudly — a thing of the past) struggles to assemble the “material for a society” Nietzsche thought had vanished from the earth. And this is a recipe for politics, not quietism — a Left that can look the world in the face.[64]

So here, once again, the catchphrase of “no future” makes an appearance. Clark gives no indication that his usage in any way derives from Berardi’s; it seems to be an independent discovery. Signs of an absent future seem everywhere present.

Žižek, in his gloss on Clark’s essay in “Signs from the Future” — the final chapter of his most recent book, The Year of Dreaming Dangerously — has no difficulty making out some of its obvious limitations. Still, the Slovenian theorist seeks to salvage what he considers its basic “grain of truth”: the Left’s excessively “futural” bent, a charge from which he does not even exempt Marx himself. Along with Clark and Berardi, Žižek sees in the anticipatory nihilism expressed by the refrain “no future” an avenue of escape from the grim logic of impending catastrophe. Only this attitude offers a way out. For Žižek, it is therefore crucial to recognize just “how ambiguous the slogan ‘no future’ is.” “[‘No future’] does not designate the closure, the impossibility of change, but what we should be striving for — to break the hold of the catastrophic ‘future’…and thereby open up the space for something New ‘to come.’”[65] Whatever their differences, Žižek, Clark, and Berardi all concur on at least this one point — “no future” is the new future.

The rest of Žižek’s piece is rather uneven, however. He oscillates between a loosely Benjaminian concept of history as fragmentary and disjointed — as standing in need of redemption — and the “tragic” worldview espoused by Clark (a worldview he imputes, perhaps more significantly, to Hegel).[66] Summoning up the famous image of the “owl of Minerva” from Hegel’s Philosophy of Right,[67] by which the future resists comprehension, he reaffirms the imperviousness of the future to foreknowledge. Against the pretenses of those who cling to the notion of its predictability, Žižek thus strictly forbids “any positive imagining of the future Communist society.”[68]

Herein lies the source of Žižek’s quarrel with Marx. He accuses Marx of hypostatizing transient features of the capitalism of his day and surreptitiously mapping them onto the future, amplifying its beneficial aspects while downplaying its detrimental ones. Because Marx allegedly postulates a “hidden teleology” in human history, guiding it ineluctably on toward communism, Žižek argues “we should return from Marx to Hegel.”[69]

Whether or not this is an accurate characterization of Marx’s concept of communism, Žižek ultimately finds himself unable to stop at the point of “back to Hegel.” Sooner or later, the revivalist logic of “back to Hegel” leads straightaway “back to Kant.” Pivoting around a famous terminological distinction introduced by the latter, Žižek specifies his meaning: “Signs from the future are not constitutive but regulative in the Kantian sense; their status is subjectively mediated, i.e., they are not discernible from any neutral ‘objective’ study of history, but only from an engaged position.”[70]

Though this formulation very nearly hits its mark, complications soon begin to appear along precisely those lines within German classical philosophy that Žižek is operating. A stark symmetry reveals itself. Just as the absolute for Kant marks the limit dividing the legitimate application of theoretical (constitutive/natural) categories of the understanding from the practical (regulative/ moral) ideals of reason, the future for Hegel marks the limit beyond which the philosophy of history has nothing more to say. August Cieszkowski, a disciple of the latter, already noted this congruence between their philosophies in 1839:

In his work [Hegel] did not mention the future by name at all and [claimed] that in exploring history philosophy can be only valid retroactively…Indeed, the unknowability of the future in Hegel presents the same problem as the unattainability of the absolute in general in Kant, the only difference being that in Kant the problem is a necessary result of his critical standpoint and system whereas in Hegel the problem is brought in from the outside and thus destroys the entire order.[71]

Cieszkowski’s objection to the seemingly arbitrary limit Hegel imposes on philosophical history’s field of inquiry is valid insofar as it remains circumscribed within the sphere of theoretical knowledge. But even if Cieszkowski’s own “historiosophy” transcends the epistemic boundaries laid down by Hegel in its attempt to apprehend the future, it still fails to conceptualize history as anything other than a passive object for thought. Marx’s criticism of his fellow Young Hegelians in general and of Feuerbach in particular holds good for Cieszkowski as well. “The chief defect of all hitherto existing materialism,” he observed, “is that reality…is conceived only in the form of the object…of contemplation, but not as sensuous human activity, practice, not subjectively.” Earlier strains of materialist thought, in their rejection of idealism, by and large neglected the role played by human activity in the transformation and reconstitution of social reality.

The issue of the intelligibility of history or the future was for Marx never a matter of simply comprehending the world as a self-enclosed, finished entity. In contrast to Hegel or Cieszkowski, Marx held that “the question of whether objective truth can be attributed to human thinking is not a question of theory but is a practical question. Man must prove the truth, i.e., the reality and power of his thinking in practice.”[72] Which is to say that the intelligibility of the future depends on the extent to which the historical process is made conscious (in theory) so that it might be consciously made (in practice). This would appear to verify the ancient Latinate wisdom cited by Vico, which holds that “the true is precisely what has been made” (Verum esse ipsum factum).[73] Or as one obscure group of historians put it a few years ago, inspired by its rereading of Marx on Feuerbach, “the world can only be known to the extent that it can be changed.”[74]

Likewise, it follows from this insight that the future cannot be known without having first been self-consciously made out of the materials bequeathed to the present by its past. In the meantime, the superficial integuments of present-day reality ought not to be frozen and rationalized as some sort of timeless order — i.e., the way things are, the way things were, the way they always will be. The real is still irrational; the whole remains untrue.[75]

But this should not be understood to imply a retreat into utopianism or a disavowal of reality. “Reality” for the Marxist nearly always contains a surfeit. There is always more to it than that which is immediately given. “Marxist reality means: reality plus the future within it,” Ernst Bloch once wrote. “Marxism proves by bringing about concrete changes that are left open: [the] immeasurable amount of unused dreams, of unsettled historical consciousness…in the world.”[76] Is it conceivable, perhaps, that the reality of the present has substantially regressed from the position it held a century ago? What if reality itself has become impoverished, to the point where it is now less “real” than it used to be? Might Baudrillard, his clownishness notwithstanding, have been onto something when describing “the disappearance of the real”?[77] “Pseudo-reality prevails in a world of pseudo-politics,” remarks Richard Rubin, paraphrasing the Austrian modernist Robert Musil. “Something like reality is happening, but it’s not really real.”[78] If in the past the future was more emphatically felt than it is at present — and if its world was thus more historically “real” (because more political) — how might the possibilities it saw before it be made accessible again to consciousness?

Memories of the future

Murmurings can still be heard, intimations of the world that had been promised, recalling a time when there actually was a future. These linger on, increasingly muted and hushed, refracted throughout the echo chamber of history. Somewhere in the background one still hears the faint crashes of La Marseillaise and L’Internationale; the notes all run together. The cry of “Liberté, égalité, fraternité!” rings immortal through the ages, but it has fallen on deaf ears. This project of emancipation clearly belongs to the past, separated from the present by an almost unbridgeable amnesia. Counterintuitively, access to this future can only be gained through an extraordinary act of memory.[79]

Several years back, an odd injunction was thus issued: “Remember the future!” What this meant was parsed as follows:

In order to recognize [the] outstanding problems of capital we must remember the future whose horizons of possibility informed the politics of the best traditions of revolutionary Marxism. Despite the limitations of Marxism as an historical movement, we nevertheless remain within the horizon of the history of capital and its social effects, whether politics today recognizes it or not. Hence, apparently paradoxically, it is by recognizing the horizons of possibility of capital as revealed in the past that we may recognize the limits humanity needs to overcome to realize its potential, emancipated future.[80]

Incidentally, this is how Marx related to his own political moment in 1852. Reflecting on his bitter disappointment with the 1848 revolutions, and now faced with the long night of reaction that had set in, he observed that the bourgeois revolutions draped themselves in the garb of the past. By the mid-nineteenth century, however, this repetition had become farcical.[81] Marx invoked the memory of the French Revolution of 1789, whose ambitions had been so much loftier than those of his day, in order to add that “[t]he [modern] social revolution…cannot draw its poetry from the past, but only from the future.”[82]

Besides Berardi, there have been others who have detected the post-futurist character of the present. Like him, they have registered the passing of the future in recent decades. Unlike him, they are not convinced that it is time to just have done with it, and maintain that humanity cannot wipe its hands of the future once and for all. The gateway to the future resides in the past, and must be sought there.

This is the task undertaken by the English architectural critic Owen Hatherley in his tour de force debut, Militant Modernism. In its opening lines, Hatherley goes over some of the difficulties involved in “retracing” the development of the modernist movement, whose stated goal was to abolish its own necessity:

Erase the traces. Destroy, in order to create. Build a new world on the ruins of the old. This, it is often thought, is the Modernist imperative, but what of it if the new society never emerged? We have been cheated out of the future, yet the future’s ruins lie about us, hidden or ostentatiously rotting. So what would it mean, then, to look for the future’s remnants? To uncover clues about those who wanted, as Walter Benjamin put it, to “live without traces”? Can we, should we, try and excavate utopia?[83]

Here again, the key to the future redemption of humanity is indexed by its historic past.[84] “The phrase ‘erase the Traces’ comes from Brecht,” Hatherley continues to explain. “Yet…socialism, though it wants to create a new society, ‘lives in traditions,’ as Leon Trotskii put it. It remembers the defeats, the failed attempts, and with revolution, it enters a world ‘already familiar to us, as a tradition and as a vision.’” The tradition referenced here, via Trotskii, is none other than what Marx meant by “the tradition of all the dead generations, [which] weighs like a nightmare on the brain of the living.”[85] The future beyond capital can only be achieved by overcoming the present’s subjugation to the past — or, what is the same, society’s subservience to “capital vis-à-vis living labor,…the rule of past, dead labor over living labor.”[86]

Corresponding to this circuitous chronology, Hatherley illustrates the more dialectical approach to history with an historical example: “Brecht and Eisler’s syncopated ‘mass song’ remembers the pile-up of failures, brutalities, and corpses that is politely called history, yet harnesses the memory of those defeats for the purposes of a different world. ‘Forwards! Not Forgetting,’ it implores.”[87] A fitting apothegm for a forgetful age.

Hatherley is not alone in calling for the excavation of utopia. Jameson’s overview of past utopias, Archaeologies of the Future: The Desire Called Utopia and Other Science Fictions, proposes a similar course of action.[88] Both make use of Benjamin’s short rumination on “Excavation and Memory” from 1932, in which the mnemonic process is likened to an archaeological dig into a “buried past.”[89] For Hatherley, the primary sites that must be excavated are ruins — and more precisely, ruins of the future.[90] Ruins, as the infamous Nazi architect Albert Speer maintained in his “theory of ruin-value,” inspire a certain awe in those who behold them.[91] They appear to belong to an epic past.[92] Hatherley recounts the way he experienced the derelict Brutalist structures of Reyner Banham’s Britain, the last gasp of modernist utopianism after the Second World War. At least empirically, the most memorable aspect of these encounters, he confesses, was an overwhelming sense of “nostalgia for the future, a longing for the fragments of the half-hearted postwar attempt at building a new society, an attempt that lay in ruins by the time I was born.”[93]

There is, undoubtedly, the danger of lapsing into a facile retro-futurism at this point: a vision of spacecraft in sepia, the yellowed pages of avant-garde magazines. Fortunately, Hatherley is not particularly given to sentimentality. One of the more intriguing subtexts to his aside on “nostalgia for the future,” however, is the way that inverts the post-Soviet literary theorist Svetlana Boym’s book on The Future of Nostalgia.[94] Though he incorrectly interprets this sense of loss as a vindication of postmodernity, the renowned critic Andreas Huyssen ascribes a similar value to ruins as Hatherley in his article “Nostalgia for Ruins,” taking them to be material embodiments of modernist nostalgia. Huyssen there asserts that “we are nostalgic for the ruins of modernity because they still seem to hold a promise that has vanished from our own age: the promise of an alternative future.”[95]

The intuitive sense of injustice that Hatherley alluded to, the feeling of “having been cheated out of the future,” is thus hardly unique to him. Hidden in the otherwise freakish sideshow of the Republican primaries this past winter, there would seem to have been a slim sliver of truth — a truth concealed in the opportunistic campaign slogans and Super PAC fundraisers of Romney and Gingrich: “Restore Our Future” and “Winning Back Our Future,” respectively. Obama’s campaign from four years ago, despite its many promises of “hope,” “progress,” and “change,” was implicitly built on comparisons to MLK, JFK, and FDR (i.e., three figures from the past).[96] But then again, who today can be bothered to remember all the unkept promises and cynical electioneering of just four years ago?

In search of lost time

Over a century ago, Marcel Proust embarked in search of lost time. The lost time of the present is somewhat different from the lost time of Proust’s day, however. Today it is not only the past coded in the present that goes unrecognized. Even more than that it is the scattered remains of past futures whose horizons have yet to be surpassed.

“Our world, like a charnel-house, lies strewn with the detritus of dead epochs,” wrote the great modernist architect Le Corbusier in 1923.[97] What if it is the present epoch, however, which is today dead? The memorabilia of past ages point to a future that never came: Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky’s Taylorized kitchen, Georgii Krutikov’s flying cities, Mikhail Okhitovich’s ribbon patterns of settlement, El Lissitzky’s call for an “interstellar revolution” and “the conquest of gravity,” Corbusier’s own proposals for “exact air” and “sun control.” In the world that did emerge — the world of “now we know better” — all these now assume the form of utopian kitsch. But against the future they projected, even the most daring futures presently imagined appear pale in comparison.

Perhaps Colin Rowe and Fred Koetter were right after all. It may well be that, as they wrote in their co-authored classic, Collage City, the second half of the twentieth century saw utopia’s final “decline and fall.”[98] At least with Rowe and Koetter, this observation is tinged with regret. It is no cause for celebration. As Jameson put it in his 2003 article “Future City,” at present “it is easier to imagine the end of the world than it is to imagine the end of capitalism.”[99] Since he wrote this line, it has been quoted ad nauseam (even misattributed to Žižek and Mark Fisher). But Jameson himself seems to be aware that he was simply repeating something Adorno recorded in 1956: “The horror is that for the first time we live in a world in which we can no longer imagine a better one.”[100]

In a “future” installment (assuming there even is one) it will be necessary to write the history of the future. Not simply to catalogue them as relics for display in the museum of the past, but rather as forgotten premonitions of the world that might still someday come. Not as a passing fancy of the present or a fleeting source of amusement in an unchanging world — but as a reminder to all that this world can be changed.

Just a taste of the planned sequel, “The Promontory of Centuries: Towards an Interplanetary Socialism,” featuring Martians, ray-guns, laser-beams, spacecraft scavenging at the edge of the galaxy mining planets for precious ore. It’ll be broken into a couple sections I can think of, “To the Rim of Space,” “To the End of Time,” etc.:

    Determining the future’s place in history is no easy task.  In a paper recently presented at the Chicago Center for Contemporary Theory, Chris Cutrone goes over some of the basic concepts surrounding this complex issue.  “History is a way the present relates to itself,” he explains.  “History mediates the present, and anticipates the future…Potential futures are generated out of the relation of past and present, out of the relation of the present to itself through history.”[1]  In other words, history can help to understand the momentum of the present carried over from the past, as well as possible futures toward which it may be tending.

    But how does the present relate to a future that the past expected but never came to pass? How might a history of the future that was missed serve to anticipate a greater future that is yet to come? Counterfactual guesswork may be inadmissible in rigorous historical research (and for good reasons), but this does nothing to change the fact that at any given time, different futures are imagined to be possible than the one that happens to actualize.  It would be folly to think that the way an age historically relates to itself has no effect on how things eventually turn out.  “It is absurd to think of a purely ‘objective’ foresight,” wrote “The person who has foresight in reality has a ‘program’ that he wants to see triumph, and foresight is precisely an element of this triumph.”  What effect can a society’s temporal self-understanding have on its politics?

    Last May, the LRB published an article by the prominent Nietzsche scholar Malcolm Bull, “What is the Rational Response?”, in which he explores the divergent political temporalities of past, present, and future.  Bull selects an emblematic figure from history as epitomizing each temporal vector in relation to the other two.

    Edmund Burke epitomizes the tyranny of the past over present and future.
    Thomas Paine epitomizes the tyranny of the present over future and past.
    Vladimir Lenin epitomizes the tyranny of the future over past and present.[2]

    This may be a little too neat and schematic, but its utility as shorthand should not be denied.  In light of all the debate that has gone on regarding Lenin’s place in the present’s political imagination,[3] it is perhaps only appropriate that there has been such a concerted effort “to exorcise the memory of revolution in the twentieth century — specifically, the haunting memory of Lenin.”[4]  Insofar as Lenin represents the memory of actual politics, he also represents the memory of the future that continues to haunt the present.

    Modernism’s association of the Soviet leader with the image of the future goes back quite far.  Even Lenin’s distinctive profile — “the gnarled iron of Lenin’s skull” (Soviet author Isaak Babel)[5] and his “rough, angular face” (anarcho-Bolshevik revolutionary Victor Serge)[6] — seemed predestined for depiction in avant-garde propaganda.  Gustav Klutsis’ fabulous photomontage has a cutout of Lenin striding across a planar, Suprematist globe, announcing universal electrification.  El Lissitzky’s iconic podium shows him delivering a speech against a stark sulfur backdrop, hovering over a barren, windswept square.

    Moreover, Lenin’s idea of a political “vanguard” and the modernist idea of an artistic “avant-garde” are semiotically identical in Russian: авангард.  The deaths of avant-garde movements in art and vanguardist movements in politics are not coincidental.  Both are symptomatic of the broader foreclosure of the future.

    Lenin’s futuristic appeal also extended into the realm of literature.  The great science fiction novelist and Fabian H.G. Wells, though skeptical about the long-term prospects of the October Revolution, interviewed Lenin (“the dreamer in the Kremlin”) in 1920 and several subsequent occasions.  They spoke of the future annihilation of the contradiction between town and countryside under full-fledged communism.[7]  Maiakovskii, the cubo-futurist poet, effectively immortalized Lenin in verse.  After the revolutionary leader died in 1924, Maiakovskii proclaimed his persistence throughout the past, present, and future: “Lenin lived; Lenin lives; Lenin will live!”[8]

    His mummification and subsequent entombment in the architect Aleksei Shchusev’s series of mausoleum designs completed the process of material immortalization: the first, tentative installation (wooden, 1924), its enlarged successor (wooden, 1924-1929), and its final, permanent version (stone, 1929-present).[9]  The only real shame, besides its blatant disregard for the wishes of the departed, is that Konstantin Mel’nikov’s proposal for a prismatic sarcophagus for Lenin was never built.

    Wells had already played a significant part, albeit indirectly, in the development of Bolshevism.  His 1898 work War of the Worlds pitted humanity against Martian invaders, and served as a touchstone for Aleksandr Bogdanov’s Red Star a decade later, as well as its sequel, Engineer Memmi, from 1913.  Bogdanov, a major Bolshevik political thinker, scientist, and rival to Lenin within the party, told the story of a socialist earthling, Leonid, who is conveyed via ætheroneph [этеронеф] to a utopian communist society on Mars.[10]  “The history of Martian Marxism begins in 1908,” writes Owen Hatherley.[11]

    But it hardly ended there.  In 1916, the futurist bard and prophet of transrationalism [заумь] Velimir Khlebnikov — praised by Berardi for his quixotic pursuit of “a virtually planetary language”[12] — declared allegiance to the red planet, issuing the extraterrestrial “Trumpet of the Martians.”  “Cloaked only in our victories,” he boasted, “we proceed to build a youthful union, its sail skimming along the axis of time…But we are beautiful in the unflinching betrayal of our past…Roar, black sail of time!”[13]

    Mars was not the only planet colonized by the imagination of the Soviet avant-garde.  Viktor Kalymkov, a relatively minor architectural student at the experimental art institute (VKhUTEMAS), sketched out plans in 1930 for a levitating city that would straddle the rings of Saturn.  The painter Konstantin Iuon composed the image of a “New Planet,” its skies ablaze with phosphorescent light.  Kazimir Malevich, the founder of Suprematism, occasionally referred to his otherworldly arkhitektons — intersecting stereometric planes and polyhedra — as planity, or “planets.”  Marxists were not alone in this venture, either: avant-garde anarchists and other fellow travelers of the Bolshevik project joined in, also.  Richard Stites, a historian of revolutionary utopianism, records: “Anarchist schemes for a new world included a universal language, cosmism or universal humanity, geanthropism (i.e., the emancipation of women), pedism (i.e., the liberation of children), and Anarcho-Biocosmism, a plan to launch a social revolution ‘in interplanetary space but not upon Soviet territory.’”[14]

    The futuristic swell toward outer spacewas held at bay during the Stalin years, but rose again sharply with the Sputnik orbit, the ascent of manned Vostok satellites, and the cosmonaut Gagarin, the first human to break free of the Earth’s gravitational field.

  3. Hi Ross, thanks for your thoughts.

    I enjoyed your writing, it was clear, but also there was style there. I’m glad that you did not follow the Hegelian method of the introduction mirroring the conclusion, so that your less flattering conclusion about Berardi’s book early on was a suprise, a flourish.

    I have been marked down in essays for doing this before. I did not even realise this until commenting about essay technique with a lecturer. They mark you down for that especially in written exams, in case you realised later on in the essay your conclusion, rather than this is a nice denouement and I have seen it used more in “Latin”/Southern European writing, I quite like that in what is written in the essay style but has this less academic and more “artistic” touch in the review.

    Very true that concepts of the past and future are very idiosyncratic and seen through the prism of the current time/geist/epoch.

    Modernism and positivism do go hand in hand and indeed ever since the 19th C. the belief in “progress” and the adage that “Every day, in every way, things are getting better”, as literally cited to me in a lecture as well and in the context of explaining positivism in the classic form.

    Post Modernism in the 1980s seems to confirm Berardi’s “post future” period. Pessimism about the future is not new, though, if we look back to the Dark ages, that is one easy example. Lifeboat communism, agree, the jargon and sloganised terms give away the communist element, for sure.

    I maintain that in this time and idiosyncratically that indeed, people have a more pessimistic outlook on the future, so not “no future” per se (as in negative, not neutral), but that this is also not a unique phenomenon (in history).

    I remember seeing a medieval drawing showing a jumble of Pikemen fighting titled “The bad war” it meant a terrible future, or present when pikemen were seen as the best kind of infantry, because they could defeat knights and damage normal infantry with shorter weapons. These were also the times of the mercenary armies in Italy too (so there were bands of these roving pikemen warring all the time, as the drawing alluded to), but there are many times I could indicate where the present was grim, so people extrapolated a bad or no future from that (again, the invention of the Crossbow and contemporary predictions that the “world would end in violence”).

    However, this is in the field of historiography that I speak, as do you, but, when you interleave the outlook for those of us on the left, I see this as different (perhaps).

    Because the change of outlook in the mainstream heralded in the US by defeat in Vietnam and the circumstances of Nixon’s resignation was all a part of one big loss of innocence, which *arguably* began with the JFK assassination, but definitely happened in the 1970s and worldwide.

    This, however, lead to more *belief* and radicalism on the left initially, for a lot of vindication on a lot of issues.

    The loss of faith in the left began unsurprisingly enough with the collapse of the Soviet Union and consequent marginalisation of Marxist views from academia to the mainstream.

    I agree also about overproduction and exhaustion of resources, but also I would indicate declining wages in real terms and living standards for the first times since fore WWII. No wonder there is a concurrent pessimism about the future if now the game is statistically up that our parents and grandparents had better living standards relative to us (not sure if Bifo did too).

    LOL, slip of the pen, entirely agree, but declare a technocratic bent in me, as I suppose in you too (technocratic as in believe in technocrats running things, but also in not throwing technology or urbanisation away, just in making it all more functional for human interaction).

    It’s funny that yesterday I walked past a man standing in front of a discarded framed print, hand sketched originally of a working class man yoking up a Shire horse, I walked past thinking “Classic British romantic sentimentalism of a bucolic past that we never really had”.

    It was hard work, humankind was not free in all the drudgery just to be self-sufficient and before they had the liberty to read books and so on.

    About the senility of Europe, well, decay and attendant Cynicism, I can indicate post the fall of Rome and the early Dark Ages as another pessimistic of the future time and with also having less faith in humanity, as opposed to in times of safety/certainty and material comfort.

    “Senile dementia of post-Marxism”, haha, I see what they did there, and know that feeling well.

    Ah, let us also not forget that the essential element of the Aeschylean tragedy is also hubris, for me really most kinds of positivism, even of the Fukuyama kind are hubristic, but I can also lazily point to the excessive production of everything, the cost to the environment and so on (as also being kinds of hubris in the very late modern era).

    Of course Zizek can’t exclude Marx, the arch-positivist.

    Ah, but it’s *not* just Hegel, it is Marx’s time, as I said earlier, “Every day, in every way…” was the maxim, belief in progress was an utter norm that it is easy to forgive Marx from being blind to it (but again declare my methodological interest for cyclical and not linear and rejecting determinism).

    This is why by extension Marx naturally transposes the line of “inevitable” progress to continue, as was being scientifically projected at the time anyway. There is no other way (for me) as an historian and sociologist that Marx would really do it at the time, because although just norms, they were held to be universal and scientific truths of the time.

    As EH Carr indicates early in his historiographical work “What is History?” that it was stated by the most eminent Victorian Historian of his day, that “Ultimate history” had been reached; that there was not further technological development possible, and because of that and the fact that everything was now written down and archived, that indeed there would be no more history.

    But this is the trap that most positivists fall into.

    This is also what formed the foundations of the belief in the future at the time and into the 20th C.

    Hegel came from a more unstable time in his region, but wanted to like you say rationalise it for posterity’s sake, like the monks of medieval times did in the chronicles pretending that everyone was pious and god-fearing.

    Well, well, how supremely ironic that yesterday my Mum (Modernist Architect) was helping me get some decorating materials and I talked about Albert Speer again and Neoclassicism and why his book apart from about exculpating his use of slave labour, he also take great pains to exculpate that. How he was following orders and that he preferred Ionic scale the best (and that the gargantuan scales used in neoclassicism were aberrations and so on).

    I also indicated how it was used in the US to give a fake provenance and age to stuff thrown up recently in a new nation, and how, of course, it had to be European.

    But I like it, especially the Soviet stuff because indeed, it is a past vision of the future that was optimistic and encapsulates that time, that present, their vision of the future, indeed for me (liking) in a consciously nostalgic way.

    Agree that it is incapable of validating post-Modern retro pastiches, obviously not.

    Yes, the perception of decay is now lapping the shores of the US, but in the senile European continent, this is not the first time, as the Italians for how long they have experienced optimism and then pessimism about the future (or the Greeks), so much so now that it is jaded, so jaded senility, perhaps, haha…

Hi Ross – I take issue with your description John Zerzan’s views as a ‘latter-day form of Luddism’: my understanding (& preferred usage) of the word ‘Luddism’ applies to textile-workers and machine-breakers between 1811-1817. You may mean ‘Neo-Luddism’, but that is a label that is applied across a wide-gamut of views that don’t necessarily have much in common at all with *true* Luddism, apart from in the imagination of Neo-Luddites themselves. Case in point is the ‘anti-technology’ position of Zerzan – which was not the stance of the Luddites – I’m sick of reminding people of it. To suggest views like these can be labelled ‘Luddite, ‘Luddism’ is an insult to the folk from 200 years ago.

    Zerzan wrote about the *actual* Luddites once in 1976 (‘Who Killed Ned Ludd?’), and it’s not a particularly good article IMO.

    • Thank you for pointing this out. You’re right; my usage was too vulgar. I’ll change it to Neo-Luddism, since as you say it’s a more gelatinous movement without much of an historical connection to actual Luddism. Sorry if you took offense, Ned.

  7. Interesting essay. Perhaps one of the more striking aspects of our historical period is its mode of effacing the very conditions of speaking or writing about it. That said, your metahistory of the future (with shades of a meta-‘history of the future’) is an ideal method of breaking this silence.

    The only error I noticed was your use of Marx & Engels’ term “the idiocy of rural life,” which has been shown to be a mistranslation.
